How I work
I came into development sideways. I spent two years writing test automation at Philips before I wrote a line of production code, and I've never stopped being glad it happened in that order — testing first taught me what breaks, which turns out to be the most useful thing to know once you're the one building it.
So I optimize for code that can be proven rather than code that looks clever: clear boundaries, a real interface wherever the outside world gets in, and some way to reproduce any state without waiting on a network call. The one time I benchmarked my "fastest" pipeline properly, it lost to the naive version — and the only reason I caught it was that the setup made the comparison cheap to run.
The rest of it I picked up outside work. Combat medic service taught me to keep running the checklist while everything is loud. And the most honest product feedback I've ever received came from my wife, who used a tool I built every single day and had no patience whatsoever for my architecture.
